2011 Oscar Fashion

Some of my faves from the evening...

Amy Adams in a blue sparkly stunner.

The eternal beauty, Gwyneth Paltrow.  Love love love it.

Hallee Steinfeld, totally cute.

Va Va Voom!  Love this bright and perfectly fitting number on Jennifer Hudson.  Rockin' bod, too.

Marissa Tomei knows what Oscar glamour is all about.  She's gorgeous.

Love this fun frock on Mila Kunis.  The color is perfect for her.  I would've loved to have had a dress like this for Barbie.

Oscar-Noms: Shorts

Last night husband and I checked out the 2011 Oscar-Nominated Live Action Shorts.  These rarely seen films (especially in our corner of the world) are often my favorite.  I love seeing a story unfold and resolve itself in 30 minutes or less.  This year's nominations are great! From a skilled dart thrower who finds himself turning into Cupid (God of Love) to the heart-breaking last wish of a dying young man (Wish 143), these films are worth seeing.  Find them near you!
Enjoy Oscar night this Sunday!

Salamba Sirsasana

Salamba Sirsasana, or Headstand, has been a daunting challenge in my yoga practice for years.  I have always had much more lower body strength than upper body strength and have thus been terrified of falling on my face when attempting this pose.  Well, last night I made a giant leap forward: I made it up into my headstand (feet supported by the wall) and stayed there for about a whole minute.  I even had strong enough shoulders and arms to support my weight without getting a sore head (that's how it's always been in the past).
This achievement totally made my night and I just have to say, I'm proud of me!

Happy Birthday, Sara!

Today I'm wishing a very happy birthday to Sara, one of my nearest and dearest friends.  Sara and I played soccer together in high school and did various other activities with our group of girlfriends.  We became fast friends during our college years and found ourselves gallivanting around town having an impossible amount of fun.  Lucky for me that bond has only strengthened over the years.
Sara is one of those friends who will always tell it to you like it is.  She isn't bashful about the truth and she's not stingy with her hugs.  She's always there to listen and she'll light up your day with her infectious laughter.
Sara, my dear, on your 30th birthday I'm celebrating you and the fabulous (more than a) decade we've shared and I'm wishing you a lifetime of laughter and discovery.  I love you!

Bye Bye Bobby's Beard

I came home from work yesterday to this.  My husband was shaving off his "winter beard" in stages.  Stage 1 was just his chin.  I was cracking up!

Stage 2 involved an interesting zigzag pattern that was a little Chuck Norris and a little Roy Head circa the 1970's.

 Stage 3 was a Magnum P.I. 'stache.

Surprise!  Only half a M.P.I. 'stache!

This was too fun (and funny)!  Husband, I love you.  Thanks for making me laugh.

It's Raining Cats

How adorably hilarious are these little guys?  I find myself laughing out loud and wanting to eat them at the same time.  You've got to see the rest - here.  Too cute!

Happy Valentine's Day

Happy Valentine's Day!  I hope you have a love-filled day today.  Husband and I are making a delicious meal together tonight and having a lovely date night (at home).  And, he sent flowers to my office - so sweet.

Bob's parents invited us over for a "Red" dinner last night in celebration of Valentine's Day.  What a fun idea, right?  They served spaghetti with red sauce, red wine and candy hearts.  We brought a heart shaped cherry chip cake that we made - yumm-o!

Cuban Can Do

Last night husband took me out for dinner to one of my favorite places.  It's no secret that the Cuban sandwich special at Black Dog Smoke & Ale House tops my list of culinary delights.  I've decided that there are three stages of the meal.

Stage 1: Holy cow does this look good!  My mouth has been watering for the entire 25 minute wait in anticipation of this moment.  I'm going to eat the WHOLE thing.

Stage 2: Oh my gosh, I'm so full I think I'm going to explode.  I am seriously full up to my gullet, but I cannot leave these last three bites just sitting here.  It would be a disgrace to this fine sandwich.  Must.  Push.  Through.

Stage 3: (mouth so full from last bite that you can barely understand a word) Mmmmm, soooo good.  Can't breathe.  Sorry fries, not a chance.

Stage 4 of the process is worth noting... passed out on couch less than 45 minutes later...

Pretty Bright Idea

What a sweet and creative idea for a Valentine's gift.  If my valentine didn't read my blog, I might just make this for him.

And, it reminds me of a joke my father-in-law wrote into an article today:

How many optimists does it take to replace a light bulb?

None; Who says it's dark?

Vince-piration

It's the eve of the greatest football game of the year and, while not a die-hard football fan myself, I stumbled upon some quotes from the legendary Vince Lombardi that I had to share.  What a guy.

“Mental toughness is many things and rather difficult to explain. Its qualities are sacrifice and self-denial. Also, most importantly, it is combined with a perfectly disciplined will that refuses to give in. It’s a state of mind – you could call it ‘character in action.’”

“If you’ll not settle for anything less than your best, you will be amazed at what you can accomplish in your lives.”

“The good Lord gave you a body that can stand most anything. It’s your mind you have to convince.”

“Leadership is based on a spiritual quality --- the power to inspire, the power to inspire others to follow.”

“After all the cheers have died down and the stadium is empty, after the headlines have been written, and after you are back in the quiet of your room and the championship ring has been placed on the dresser and after all the pomp and fanfare have faded, the enduring thing that is left is the dedication to doing with our lives the very best we can to make the world a better place in which to live.”

I could go on and on quoting this guy...

Happy Super Bowl weekend!

Hello Sunshine

The sun is shining today and its wonderful! Although it still feels like 3 degrees, I really can't help but smile with that bright sunshine streaming in through the windows.  And, I love this print.  It makes me think of a shiny L.A. afternoon in the springtime with endless possibilities.

Countdown to spring: 44 days.

Purple Party Dresses

Aren't these pretty?  The purple is so bright and makes me think of spring being just around the corner!  I recently went overboard on dress shopping and now have something to wear for the three weddings I'm attending this year and a bestie's birthday outing.  I couldn't resist!

For the Love of Science

I don't usually read the opinions section of the newspaper, but considering I'm snowed in today I had a little more time on my hands.  The first line of Leonard Pitts, Jr.'s column caught my attention:
ITEM: Only 28 percent of high school science teachers
consistently follow National Research Council guidelines
encouraging them to present students with evidence of evolution.
Thirteen percent "explicitly advocate creationism or intelligent design.''

That statistic is staggering.
The stupid giant is spot on.
